Nephrology, Dialysis and Renal Transplant Centre
The numbers of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) continue to increase each year with the most common causes of kidney failure being diabetes and high blood pressure. The key to treatment of CKD is early detection and patients with diabetes and high blood pressure should therefore have their kidney function and urine tested by a kidney specialist at least once a year. Other common causes of kidney failure include autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and these are usually younger patients with symptoms such as joint pains, skin rash, mouth ulcers, and fever. Others features include frothy urine, tiredness, breathlessness, ankle swelling or a family history of kidney disease. CKD when diagnosed early is potentially treatable. In patients where the kidney disease has resulted in end stage kidney failure, renal replacement therapy with haemodialysis, haemodiafiltration, nocturnal haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or kidney transplant becomes necessary.
