Comprehensive Physical Rehabilitation Medicine Services at Prince Court Medical Centre

PHYSIOTHERAPY

Our team of physiotherapists provides assistance to individuals who have been affected by injury, illness, or disability. Through a systematic approach involving movement, exercise, manual therapy, education, and advice, we help people of all ages maintain their health, manage pain, and prevent disease. Our goal is to facilitate recovery and enable patients to work and maintain their independence for as long as possible. Some of the key physiotherapy services include:

  • Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physiotherapy

We offer structured rehabilitation programmes for individuals with cardiopulmonary disorders, both before and after cardiac or pulmonary surgery. The main objectives of this specialty are to improve endurance and enhance functional independence. Through a combination of manual therapy techniques and breathing exercises, we assist in clearing lung secretions.

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular rehabilitation is an exercise-based programme aimed at addressing issues such as vertigo, dizziness, and balance problems. Treatment may include manual manoeuvers to correct Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), vestibular habituation exercises, and balance re-training.

  • Burns Rehabilitation

Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in maintaining and restoring the range of motion in joints and muscles following burn injuries. The specific activities recommended depend on the size of the burn, as healed skin tends to contract or pull together, affecting mobility. Our physiotherapists work closely with individuals to improve joint function, alleviate pain, and promote optimal recovery.

  • Neurological Rehabilitation

Neurological rehabilitation focuses on addressing impairments commonly associated with neurologic conditions, such as vision, balance, mobility, activities of daily living, movement patterns, muscle strength, and loss of functional independence.

  • Spinal Rehabilitation

Our specialised team in spinal cord injury rehabilitation provides comprehensive treatment for individuals with traumatic or non-traumatic spinal cord injuries. This includes conditions like spinal cord tumours, infections, myelitis, myelopathies, infarctions, and aneurysms.

  • Sports Rehabilitation

Our sports rehabilitation programme aims to promote safe participation in physical activities, offering advice and customized interventions to prevent injuries and restore optimal function.

  • Paediatric Physiotherapy

Our physiotherapists specialise in assessing, treating, and managing infants, children, and adolescents with various disorders or diseases, including congenital, developmental, neuromuscular, skeletal, or acquired conditions. Treatment focuses on improving gross and fine motor skills, balance and coordination, strength and endurance, as well as cognitive and sensory processing/integration.

  • General Lymphedema Management

We offer comprehensive management for lymphedema, employing techniques such as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) to gently massage the skin and promote the drainage of lymph fluid. This approach is primarily used for patients suffering from lymphedema.

  • Women's Health

Our Physical Rehabilitation Medicine division also provides specialised physical therapy for women's health-related issues. This includes addressing pelvic floor dysfunction, gynaecological surgery rehabilitation, ante-natal concerns, labour preparation, post-natal recovery, and management of menopausal symptoms. Our treatments encompass a range of techniques and exercises tailored to individual needs.

  • Men's Health

We have a dedicated Men's Health Physiotherapist who focuses on managing symptoms related to male pelvic floor dysfunction. Our treatments include pelvic floor muscle training, muscle release techniques, bladder retraining, manual therapy, postural correction, core stability training, and relaxation techniques.

  • Orthopaedic Physiotherapy

Orthopaedic physiotherapy focuses on treating injuries or disorders of the skeletal system, as well as associated muscles, joints, and ligaments. The goal of our orthopaedic physiotherapists is to provide pain relief, increase joint range of motion, improve strength and flexibility, and restore patients to full function.

  • Acute & Chronic Pain Management

At PRM, we offer a range of electrotherapy modalities for acute and chronic pain management. These modalities include ultrasound, interferential therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), laser therapy, shockwave therapy, hot packs, paraffin wax baths, and cryotherapy. These techniques are tailored to each patient's specific needs to help alleviate pain and promote healing.

In addition to our comprehensive range of physical rehabilitation services, Prince Court  takes pride in offering two key facilities that elevate the standards of physiotherapy: Hydrotherapy and Aqua Rehab, and the LOKOMAT Pro robotic-assisted gait rehabilitation system. These cutting-edge facilities provide specialised and advanced treatments to enhance the recovery journey of our patients.

  • Hydrotherapy and Aqua Rehab

Hydrotherapy involves physical movement and exercise in water, akin to underwater physiotherapy. At PRM, our pool is heated to a constant temperature of 35°C, providing warm water that helps relax muscles and alleviate joint pain. The buoyancy of water supports the body's weight, reducing pain and improving joint range of motion. Hydrotherapy is particularly beneficial for individuals recovering from mobility issues caused by neurological or sports-related injuries. We also offer specialised aqua fitness classes for expectant mothers and postnatal recovery, as well as a sports aqua rehab programme designed for strengthening, flexibility, proprioception, endurance, and balance training in a group setting.

  • LOKOMAT Pro

As a leader in advanced rehabilitation techniques, Prince Court is equipped with the LOKOMAT Pro, an innovative robotic-assisted gait rehabilitation system. This state-of-the-art technology is designed specifically for patients with severe neurological impairments. The LOKOMAT Pro combines the benefits of robotic assistance and intensive training to optimize mobility and maximize recovery potential. Through precise movements and adjustable levels of support, the LOKOMAT Pro provides patients with a safe and effective therapy experience that helps retrain neural pathways and restore functional independence.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Occupational Therapy (OT) is a therapeutic approach that focuses on assessing and intervening to develop, restore, or maintain meaningful activities for individuals in need. At Prince Court, our Occupational Therapy services are divided into two main areas: adult services and paediatrics services.

    • Work/ Vocational Rehabilitation: Our Occupational Therapists collaborate with employers, case managers, and insurers to deliver a comprehensive programme focusing on injury prevention, rehabilitation and treatment, and facilitating a successful return to work.

    • Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE): We conduct thorough evaluations to measure strength, endurance, physical work demand, and positional tolerance, providing objective data on an injured employee's physical capabilities.

    • Aids & Adaptation: Our Occupational Therapists provide assessments and prescriptions for assistive technology, making specific recommendations to improve functional ability.

    • Wheelchair Assessments & Prescriptions: We assess clients' functional needs and match them with suitable wheelchairs, considering body index measurements to ensure the right fit.

    • Splinting Prescriptions & Fabrications: We offer customised splints to position and maintain affected joints, prevent deformities, and aid in the recovery of hand injuries, arthritis, spasticity, flaccidity, burns, and other injuries.

  • Paediatrics (ADHD, ASD, Autistic, Down syndrome, Global Delayed Developmental and other learning difficulty conditions) Occupational therapy programme:

In the Paediatrics Occupational Therapy programme, we focus on maximising the abilities of infants and children with conditions such as ADHD, ASD, Autism, Down syndrome, Global Delayed Developmental, and other learning difficulties. Our goal is to help children develop self-help, play, and learning skills appropriate for their age. Our Occupational Therapists conduct evaluations and provide training in the following areas:

    • Early Sensory Stimulation Programme: We offer a program that stimulates the senses in infants and young children to promote their overall development.
    • Sensory Integration Therapy: Our therapists provide sensory integration therapy to help children improve their ability to process and respond to sensory information effectively.
    • Cognitive-Visual Perceptual-Motor Skill Training: We focus on enhancing cognitive skills, visual perception, and motor skills to support children in their learning and development.
    • Functional Academic Training: We assist children in developing the necessary skills for academic tasks, such as handwriting, organisation, and time management.
    • Upper Limbs and Hand Function Training: Our Occupational Therapists specialise in training children to improve their upper limb and hand functions, enabling them to participate in daily activities and tasks.
    • Behaviour Management: We provide strategies and interventions to manage and improve behaviours that may affect a child's participation and engagement in various activities.

SPEECH THERAPY

Our team of Speech Therapists specialises in the treatment of communication disorders, providing assessment, therapy, counselling, and education for various speech and language difficulties, eating and swallowing disorders, voice problems, and cognitive function.  We prioritise early intervention and individualised care to optimise patients' ability to communicate effectively. We also offer counselling and education to primary caregivers, empowering them to support treatment goals and ensure successful outcomes at home or in school settings.

  • Stroke Rehabilitation - Speech, Language, and Swallowing Management: In addition to addressing slurred speech, breathy voice, and a slow rate of speech, we recognise the impact of eating and swallowing disorders (dysphagia) on stroke patients' quality of life. We provide comprehensive services and personalised care plans for stroke rehabilitation, including:
    • Bedside speech and language assessment and treatment
    • Bedside swallowing assessment and treatment
    • Cognition assessment and treatment
    • Assessment and management of patient in the ICU
    • Videofluoroscopic evaluation for swallowing
    • Endoscopic evaluation for swallowing
    • Transition from tube feeding to safe oral feeding
    • Diet modification – regular diet, soft diet, thick/ thin liquid
    • Teach safe swallow techniques and suitable postures during swallowing
    • Electrical stimulation for dysphagia with Intelect VitalStim
  • Voice Rehabilitation: Voice therapy focuses on teaching individuals to use the correct muscles for speech and singing, ensuring a clear and healthy voice. We address any changes in loudness, pitch, or quality of voice, providing early identification and management.
  • Stuttering Rehabilitation: We offer therapy for individuals of all ages experiencing difficulties with fluent speech. Stuttering may manifest as blocks, prolongation of sounds, or repetition of words or phrases. Our specialised interventions help improve speech fluency and communication skills.
  • Early Intervention for Newborns to Toddlers: For infants and young children, we provide early intervention services to address speech and swallowing difficulties. We work closely with a multidisciplinary team to manage conditions such as hearing difficulties or feeding problems associated with cleft lip/palate. Our Speech Therapists offer oral sensory, oral motor, and feeding therapy, targeting the structure and function of speech and swallow muscles, including the jaw, lips, tongue, head/neck stability, and trunk control. By enhancing the strength and coordination of these muscles, we facilitate the development of correct feeding and speech patterns during the early stages of development.
  • Early Intervention for Delayed Speech: Children typically begin speaking in simple sentences around the age of two. However, if a child does not progress to sentence-level speech by the age of three, they may exhibit frustration through tantrums or aggressive behaviour. Speech intervention during this stage boosts a child's confidence, prepares them for preschool, and facilitates social interactions.
  • Group Therapy: We offer group therapy sessions that provide a fun and interactive learning environment. As a child's speech progresses, they have the opportunity to participate in group sessions with peers. This group setting allows individuals to practice the skills learned during individual sessions. Group therapy is also available for adult patients, fostering social interaction and communication skills.
